The young German paratrooper grinned at his platoon commander ‘Auf wiedersehen, Herr Leutnant, sehe dich in Amerika’. In mid-December it looked as if the young paratrooper was almost right. A battle that was a turning point in the war is the focus of this exciting tour. Join us as we visit a battleground spectacular with wooded mountains and ancient buildings. Our tour will examine a battle with both human and historical interest – it was the greatest pitched battle ever fought by the Americans. The Ardennes that initially appeared to have the makings of a German victory became a costly defeat and by the close of the fighting the Germans had lost about 100,000 men – the Americans lost 19,000 and had 47,000 wounded and the British lost 10,000 men.
