On October 27, 2019, it is exactly 75 years ago that Bergen op Zoom was freed from Nazi oppression. On that day, Canadian liberators were the first to enter Bergen op Zoom. Nearly 1,000 of the fallen Canadian soldiers were buried at the Canadian Cemetery of Honor on the Ruytershoveweg. Most of them died during the Battle of the Scheldt, which was fought from September to November 1944.
In Bergen op Zoom this date was declared by the Canadian government as the Memorial Day of Canada in the Netherlands. In this context, a memorial ceremony takes place annually at the Canadian plot. In addition, prominent guests from home and abroad are present.
On October 27, 2019 at 11:00 am, a special memorial ceremony will be held to mark the 75 years of liberation. An extra large number of guests are expected to attend the ceremony. Visitors are advised to consult the websites www.bergenopzoom.nl and www.bevrijdingbrabantsewal.nl for information related to parking and the attendance of the ceremony.
This event is organised by the Foundation Bevrijding Brabantse Wal and the Canadian Government.
