Discover a life-size mural in Paris’ 13th arrondissement in honor of the fighters from La Nueve, the first soldiers of the 2nd Armoured Division to enter the city on August 24, 1944.
From the entrance into Paris on August 24 to the liberation parade on the Champs-Elysées on August 26, the mural looks back at the experiences and fighting of the men of La Nueve during the Liberation of Paris. It aims to give a tribute to these Spanish, foreign, antifascist fighters who fought hard and sometimes gave their lives to liberate France and Paris, with the hope of one day liberating their own land.
The mural will be completed from August 2nd. The official inauguration will take place on August 24, 2019 at 2:00 pm in the presence of Parisian and Spanish officials.
The liberation of Paris didn’t have Allied priority, but an uprising of the population against the Germans on 19 August made it necessary. Thus the 2nd French Armoured Division was sent to Paris and entered the city on 24 August. On 26 August a huge triumphal parade was held on the Champs-Élysées.
