The ceremony held at the Abbaye d’Ardenne since 1994 by the Canadian Battlefields Foundation, commemorates the murder of 20 Canadian prisoners of war by troops of the 12th SS Panzer Division on 7 June 1944.
Captured at the battles that day in Authie and Buron the men from the North Nova Scotia Highlanders, and Sherbrooke Fusiliers Regiment were interrogated and then executed in the garden of the Abbaye. Their bodies hastily buried were discovered by the Vico family when they returned to their home in the Abbaye. Two other Canadian soldiers from the Stormont, Dundas, and Glengarry Highlanders were executed there later that month.
In a solemn ceremony the names of the 20 murdered soldiers are read each year.
