Mallard March - Sloedam

10/26/2024

10/26/2024

The Mallard March commemorates Operation Mallard: the crossing of the Sloe (a former waterway between Walcheren and Zuid-Beveland) by Allied troops in early November 1944. After fierce fighting and many losses, Walcheren was liberated from German occupation and the supply of material for the Allies to Antwerp was secured. The route of the Mallard March passes this Sloedam.

For the youngest, there is an opportunity to be taken in a real historic army vehicle in a large column to the Sloedam, from where they will walk the 6 km back.

For the older ones, they can register for the 13 km route, or a longer distance ( 26.5 or 35.5 km).

Registration will be coordinated by the board of the Zeeland section.

At 10.30 a commemoration will be held on the Sloedam. A delegation of the section will be there with our banner. This commemoration is by its very nature very much worth experiencing. High dignitaries of the various nationalities are present and all give speeches and wreaths are laid, also on behalf of the BNMO. Musical accompaniment by, among others, Scottish Pipes and Drums.
