In August 1944 the Allies broke out of Normandy. The speed of the allied advance was so great that they outran their supply lines. In early September the advance came to a halt. The Allies desperately needed a large port to supply their troops and the obvious choice was Antwerp.
For the fifth edition of the annual Memorial Day of Canada in The Netherlands, Bergen Op Zoom cemetery will be the main place to commemorate Canadian soldiers who passed away during the Second World War.
27 October was declared by the Canadian government as the Memorial Day of Canada in the Netherlands. In this context, a memorial ceremony takes place annually at the Canadian plot. In addition, prominent guests from home and abroad are present. In 2019, a special memorial ceremony will be held to mark the 75 years of liberation.
