Many of the museums artefacts were donated by war veterans or local people. Almost every object in the Betuws War Museum has its own story, so that through the museum guides’ verbal commentary you get an excellent impression of the Betuwe in that period. You will see, for example, original uniforms of both the Allied and German troops active in the area. Furthermore, photographic material, weapons, maps, the Dutch Resistance, and the Dutch Army of May 1940 (on the Grebbe / Betuwe Line) are all given a prominent place in the museum.
Operation Market Garden
Operation Market Garden was one of the largest Allied operations of the Second World War. It aimed to secure the bridges over the rivers Maas (Meuse), Waal and Rhine in the Netherlands in order to outflank the heavy German defences of the Siegfried Line and to insure a swift advance towards Berlin.
